Simon M Poucher, BSc (Hons), PhD, FBPharmacolS
After successfully completing PhD studies at the University of Leeds where he investigated the neural reflex control of renal function, Simon joined AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals (then ICI) in 1985 where he gained expertise in ischaemic and metabolic diseases, as well as working in the fibrosis and cachexia areas. Simon has successfully led bioscience research activities and programmes in both small molecule and biologics areas during the 27 years he was at AstraZeneca. He has been involved in the full range of drug hunting activities from initial target identification and validation through to managing clinical studies and being involved in regulatory documentation submission (for US, Europe and Japan) and FDA Advisory Board presentation.

Simon has a strong background of in vivo pharmacology, biochemistry, physiology and translational sciences. The main therapeutic areas that Simon has expertise in are diabetes and diabetic complications, particularly focused on the pancreas, liver and kidney; and ischaemia, particularly peripheral vascular disease. Specific areas of pharmacological expertise in include adenosine receptor pharmacology, pyruvate dehydrogenase, glycogen phosphorylase biochemistry, beta cell mass regeneration and sodium-glucose cotransporter pharmacology.

Simon was elected as a Fellow of the British Pharmacological Society in 2012 for his contribution to pharmacology. He is well connected across academia, the pharmaceutical industry and CROs throughout the world and has successfully led and managed multi-disciplined collaborations worldwide involving all partners from all areas of drug hunting sciences.

Simon is an experienced project manager with formal training in project management at the Manchester Business School, and consolidated these skills in over 10 years of real experience leading and managing pre-clinical projects. Due to geographic location of team members the project management was delivered whilst working virtually.

He has helped SME clients in the review of disease pharmacology, selection of chemical target, developing and managing the pre-clinical in vivo programme to gain early access to the clinic and providing valuable scientific critique of the studies.

Specialist areas:

Disease Area Reviews
Due Diligence Review and Reporting
Pharmacology Reviews
Pre-clinical Pharmacology Study Design
Identification and Management of CRO Interactions and Studies
Pre-clinical Regulatory Documentation Writing
Interim Project Management
